12 Duets by Mozart, K. 487
Edited by Lee Zakian; 1995

W.A.Mozart 1756 - 1791
The 12 duets, K. 487, were written on July 27, 1786. They were originally intended to be played on the Bassette Horn, which was an early form of the clarinet. A few of the duets are preserved in Mozart's own hand, with the additional note "untern Kegelscheiben" (while playing skittles). Skittles was a type of lawn bowling game derived from the French game "quilles." Knowing Mozart's amazing ability to compose quickly, and without need for revision, it is not hard to imagine him writing these lovely pieces between turns during a game with friends!
